Todmorden Makery is a community workshop for making, repairing, learning and sharing practical skills together. We are a member and volunteer supported space based in Todmorden, bringing together people interested in repair, reuse, creativity, digital skills and community learning.

The Makery grew from local repair cafe activities and a wider interest in creating a long-term shared workshop space where people could collaborate, learn informally and support each other through practical activity. Since starting in 2021, the project has developed into a busy community hub with regular drop-ins, workshops and repair sessions.

The Green and Pleasant Computer Computer Club is a community programme that helps people explore a slower, lighter, and more independent way of using computers. The club draws on Marshall McLuhan’s idea that the medium is the message and treats the early web and email era as a useful template. We focus on practices that predate attention harvesting feeds and AI driven filtering, while reviving the strengths of simple publishing and direct communication.

The player is based on the “Blue Playlist” example:

Rather than using it as a standalone page, it has been adapted to fit into this site as a reusable component.

Technically, the following has been done:

The player layout from the Blue Playlist example has been extracted and embedded into a Hugo shortcode
Playlists are stored as external JSON files and loaded dynamically into the player
Audio files are hosted locally or on archive.org and streamed directly in the browser
The original demo CSS has been modified so it does not override the site’s theme (for example removing global body styles)
A small JavaScript layer initialises AmplitudeJS and builds the playlist UI from the JSON data
Different playlists can be used on different pages by passing parameters into the shortcode

This approach keeps things simple and in line with an open web workflow: static files, no backend, and a player that can be easily reused, modified, and shared.

LED puppet theatre

Project status: Delivery Ready. More work needed on documentation.

Building LED powered puppets and mini-stage lighting to put on a show. These sessions mix craft skills, art practices, storytelling and some elements of programming LED lights. The process can be open in scope or themed around stories concerning environmental or social issues.

Refubished Laptops for Sale at the Makery

Our volunteers have fixed up a few laptops donated from a local school. We’ve also bought hard drives for them- on offer are 4g or 8g Ram.

They have a version of Linux on them called Mint- it’s very similar to Windows but has less problems with viruses and going out of date. If you need the Windows operating system the computer guy at Tod Market could put that on pretty cheaply.

It’s Mick here with a post about asking for potential volunteers for the digital devices work we do. At the Makery, we’ve done a fair bit on finding new homes for digital devices of laptops and phones. And also helping people to use phones and laptops them with a monthly Tech and Tea.

It’s been working really well. people are happy to donate us their old devices, we wipe them and test we can get them working well and people on limited funds really need these devices.

Tribute to John Sutcliffe from fellow Makery Members

In early August 2024 our colleague and friend John Sutcliffe was admitted to Calderdale Royal with acute liver and kidney failure and long standing heart failure. We are sorry to say that John passed away in the early hours of 21st of August. His passing was thankfully painless.

John was a well liked and irreplaceable member of our team at the Makery. He will be greatly missed.

Repairing Digital Devices: While we have some capacity to physically repair digital devices, especially older laptops, we are limited in what we can do for a couple of reasons. First, they are so small you often need a specialist microscope for electronics repair. Second, if it’s your main device phone/ computer, it’s best to get it repair by a professional who is doing that work all the time. It’s less risky and it supports the local repair economy. We suggest Tech Direct or DOT Communications (computers only) or the computer/ device repairer on the Thursday market is really good too.

For quite a while we have been finding new homes for older laptops that people have donated. We wipe the hard drive put on low power operating system and make sure it works well enough to browse the web.

We are now widening this out to phones and tablets. They are tricker to fix so we are also doing a partnership with St Augustine’s refugee project who can fix the devices that we can’t.

Laptops / Craptops at the Makery

We take peoples old laptops and get them ready for new homes at the Makery.

To do that we need to wipe the hard drives and put on a new operating systems. The easiest way to do that is to put a linux operating system on instead of windows. It also avoids the ongoing problem of laptops being slow and getting viruses.

A lot of the laptops we have are older ones that still work but are not very fast. For this reason they are jokingly called craptops and marked with a poo emoji sticker.

The Makery has been a fantastic project to get involved with. As we come up to our second birthday we now have 6 weekly drop-ins and other regular Men in Sheds and Women in Workshops sessions. These are great spaces for doing repairs, getting on with your making projects or getting help to do particular project. These sessions are now usually thriving and lively. It can be a bit hectic for some. We now have a dedicated quiet session on Wednesdays at 1.30.

Ben Duxbury ran this workshop which managed to fit in making stools into a very short timeframe by carefully planning the workshop to allow different pairs of participants to make one piece each which slotted together at the end.

Come and grab some bargains and declutter your unneeded fabric and haberdashery.

Bring your unwanted fabric, thread, knitting yarn, buttons, zips, knitting needles, patterns, bits and bobs, swap for something you’ll use. And give a donation if you can to help keep us going!

It’s free to come along to the Makery and it’s free to be a member, but we – and the planet – do need help. It costs us money to rent our workshops, to run our equipment and to spread the word, but if you can’t make a money donation, there are plenty of ways to support us.

Our core annual costs are a bit over £5,000. That’s mostly rent (£3,000), tools and materials (£1,800) and admin, insurance publicity and accounting (£500). Our aim is to raise half of that via a funding application, and the other half from members.

What happens at the Makery?

What do we get up to at the Makery? Well, why not come along to have a look! It’s free, it’s friendly and it’s full of stuff to do. You can make and craft using loads of tools, materials and bits and pieces. You can make something creative or get help from our volunteers to repair things like bikes, clothes, household items and electronics.

Repairing and reusing is good for the planet and our warm and welcoming atmosphere is good for people. Every week we have free drop-in sessions where you can bring along your repairs or projects. Just turn up whenever you see the A-board outside. You don’t need to be a member, but joining us comes with benefits! Or you can simply get email updates.

This Rag Rug workshop is one of our ReCover and ReMake sessions. In these session we use recycled or reusable materials to make something artistic and/or useful. They are also aimed to be relaxing and social too. It’s a good way to find out what is happening at the Makery and you’ll be invited to join as a member and come back to drop in sessions to keep going with your projects if you want to.

It was great to host Jonathan Atkinson from Carbon Coop / People Powered Retrofit on Saturday 14th of May. There was a fully booked and packed room at Tod College and some great feedback from those that came.

We are running a ‘Beginner’s guide to using power tools’ next Wednesday 24th November between 11.30am and 3.30pm in the Makery at Tod College (a Saturday event will also be announced shortly). This is for beginners looking to gain confidence in using the Library’s tools such as circular saws, jigsaws, drills, nailers and sanders. The workshop will be hands-on and during the session we will make a Little Library for the town.

If you are not sure what you would do in the Makery Workshop then it is good to get some inspiration. That’s where our prepared Project Boxes come in. They contain materials, tools and simple instructions or inpiration to get started on a self contained project.

Projects could be some of the following:

Kids and family projects, toy making, badge making, LED lights
Arts and craft projects, sewing projects, rag rugging, lino printing
Project which build repair or DIY skills, like knife and tool sharpening, wooden box building

Opening Event for the Makey Workshop

The Makey Workshop is now official Open - here’s how you could get involved.

Last Saturday we invited all of our volunteers, supporters family and friends to come to the opening of the Makery Workshop to thank the College, Town Council and all of our volunteers and other supporters for their help so far. The opening was really good - just the right number of people and both the town civic people and friends and family seemed really impressed with the progress so far. And most importantly it was a nice vibe - very friendly It was a good celebration for the work of the volunteers who have done so much to get the workshop into a great state already.

How to Join as a Member
Up until now we have been recruiting volunteers to run our drop in sessions and this has been going really well. Many thanks to all who have volunteers so far! Now this is in place you can join as a member! Members can come into the workshop and use the space and the tools that they have the skills to use. Members can also get help with their projects from other members and volunteers. Just come to any of our open sessions and sign up as a Member.

Organising the reloved shop

Inspired by Karl Roscoe’s reloved project we have an area of the workshop where we display some of the objects, that have been donated to be fixed up by the Makery Workshop.

It would be amazing to have a volunteer have a good look at this space to be able to get across what it is all about. The ethos of fixing up, caring for objects and re-gifting them. Any way of organising this - adding art - adding text would be really welcome.

Workshop [Young People] – Family Fixit Club

Starts on 6th July - 3.30 - 5.00pm at Todmorden College Makery Workshop (just ask for the Makery at the reception of Tod College) then 13th & 20th of July 3.30 - 5.00 too

Fixing is magic. You can breathe new life into the things you love. You can build your skills up starting with simple fixes.

In our first FREE family fixing clubs we will stitch some feathers for the Phoenix and create some interactive art from recycled electronics for the base.

Workshop [Art] - Mosaic Making

These workshops led by Bill Kitchener will allow you to work on your own Mosaic as part of a group.

This art project will involve creating a small, decorative mosaic. You will have the chance to use glass and ceramic mosaic tiles to create your own design with guidance. All materials will be provided. This is for adults only.

There will be two stages to the project. A one day taster session will let you find out the techniques used and let you decide if you want to make a more ambitious project over six weeks. The sessions will last for two hours each.

We have been awarded Town Council grant funding to establish a community workshop located in Todmorden Community College.

Scavenger Labs have started start a new space for making, repairing and inventing. We have been awarded Town Council grant funding to establish a community workshop located in Todmorden Community College.

We have been donated 2 laser printers.

Laser printers are much better for printing large volumes of documents quickly and quietly - making the best laser printers ideal for home office use. Laser printers also won’t demand a new ink cartridge every hundred or so pages!

These ones need to be cleaned and tested. Let’s keep one for the Makery and then we can find a good home for the other one.

Making the Family Fixit Campaign with Ferney Lee School. A group of campaigners, artists and educators came together with the schoolchildren and staff at the school to create an environmental campaign to reduce waste.

This report describes what we did and what was valuable about the processes we used. It is aimed at other educators who may want to take inspiration from our activities and perhaps reuse them in their own way. The report covers the three main phases of the project

My current passion is teaching and researching diverse forms of digital and physical making. This involves digital game making and building arcade machines, physical computing and anything to do with the web and media making. Whenever possible I’ll bring in elements of play, social justice and thinking in systems.

My PhD in Education (ESRI) at Manchester Met is focused on game making with families. Game Design Patterns have jumped out of my research as an area of interest. Firstly leveraging the broad recognition of game patterns and secondly tapping the value design patterns as a way into learning coding.

Led by Steve Summers (Noisy Toys) and Mick Chesterman (Manchester Met School of Education), Jam Lab is built on a collaborative ethos while retaining a lean financial and branding model. This approach allows flexibility for separating activities in the future if needed.
