Making, repairing and sharing skills in Todmorden

Hello everyone,

Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent consultation. We’ve been looking through your feedback and thinking about what it means for the future of the Makery.

💬 You told us…

Here are some of the things people shared:

  • What people value: the friendly atmosphere, meeting other people, sharing skills and having somewhere to make, mend and repair.
  • Activities people appreciate: bike repair, sewing and general repair drop-ins, as well as the tool library.
  • Ideas for the future: more workshops and opportunities to learn practical skills, alongside more activities for children, young people and families.
  • Things we could improve: clearer information about sessions, a consistent welcome for newcomers and more opportunities for people to get involved in planning.

We’re grateful for all the feedback, including the things we can do better. It will help guide our conversations about what happens next.

Watch this space! We’re working towards a public follow-up event where we can share the results and discuss the future of the Makery together. More details soon.

🙋 Get involved

Join a working group

We’re setting up working groups to share ideas and help with different areas of the Makery. You don’t need to be a regular volunteer to get involved, and there are different ways to contribute.

The groups include outreach and communication, repairs and bikes, with people working together on things like publicity, community activities, organising repairs and supporting the bike workshop.

If you’d like to find out more or join a group, email todmordenmakery@gmail.com and let us know what you’re interested in.

Monthly volunteer meetings

We’re now holding monthly regular volunteer meetings. These are a chance to share ideas and information, discuss what’s happening at the Makery and work together on the things that need doing. We’ll share details of the next meeting soon.

Join our steering group

We’re also looking for people to join the Makery’s steering group and help support the project as it develops. If you’re interested, or if you know someone who could bring ideas and represent the wider community, please get in touch. You can reply to this email or contact todmordenmakery@gmail.com to put yourself forward or suggest someone.

💚 Support the Makery

In November, we’ll be launching a donations drive to help support the Makery’s future.

We’re working towards a sustainable financial situation where we can keep the Makery going without depending too heavily on grant funding. Donations will help us cover the everyday costs of running the workshop, including rent, insurance, tools and materials.

Membership and our regular drop-in sessions are free, and we want to keep them that way, so the Makery remains open to everyone, whatever their financial circumstances.

We’ll share more about the drive soon. If you have experience of this kind of donations drive and can help please get in touch with us. Also if you’d like to start the ball rolling early:
