Why support the Makery #
It is free to come along to the Makery, and membership is free too. We will always keep it that way, so that people and families on low incomes can take part, learn skills and access help with repairs.
Unfortunately as of late 2026, our bank balance is now running very low, so we are asking members, supporters and local residents to help us keep the workshop open and active. When the Makery first started, people in Todmorden supported our donations drive really generously. That support helped get the project going. We are now asking again, so that we can keep building on what has been created together.
We are running as a 100% volunteer-led project, which keeps our costs as low as possible and helps make the Makery sustainable without becoming too dependent on grants. However, we still need to cover the basic costs of having a safe, equipped and welcoming workshop.
Our core annual costs are a little over £5,000:
- Workshop rent: £3,600
- Insurance: £500
- Accounting and financial administration: £300
- Tools, repair materials and workshop supplies: the remainder
Todmorden Town Council has supported the Makery regularly and we are very grateful for that support. Other grants can take a great deal of work to apply for and manage, particularly when the project is volunteer-run. This kind of regular support from members and local people is a vital part of keeping the Makery going.
Our immediate target is £300 per month in regular donations. Monthly donations, however small, make a real difference because they help us plan ahead and cover regular bills such as rent.

Make the most of your membership #
If you are already a member, please make use of the Makery: come to the drop-ins, bring a repair, take part in a project, share an idea, or invite someone along. The more people who use and shape the workshop, the stronger it becomes.
If you are not yet a member, join the Makery for free. You can then hear about sessions, get involved in projects and help decide what the Makery becomes next.

- Donate useful tools or materials that can be used in repairs and projects.
- Volunteer with us. Come along to a drop-in session and see how you could get involved.
