Computer Club is coming back #
We are looking to relaunch the Computer Club at Todmorden Makery, now on Mondays, 4–6pm.
The club is a friendly, practical space for people who are curious about computers — whether you want to get an old laptop working well, try Linux, learn some useful digital skills, make a simple website, organise your files, create graphics, or just talk through an idea with other people.
It is not about being an expert, and it is not simply a computer repair drop-in. The aim is to make time for shared projects, learning together and trying out calmer, lower-impact ways of using technology.
A club that members can help shape #
The Makery is more than a place to fix things. Alongside our repair sessions, it is somewhere for members and volunteers to start activities, share skills and develop their own ideas.
Computer Club is one example: a low-cost, low-impact approach to computing that makes use of older equipment, free and open-source software, practical knowledge and people’s curiosity. We would love to hear from people who want to get involved, bring an idea, or help shape what it becomes.
Support the Makery → #
Keeping the Makery open means we can provide space for projects like this, as well as repairs, bike maintenance, mending, creative activities and family workshops. If you can make a one-off or regular donation, it will help us keep building this community resource.
What might we do? #
Previous sessions explored:
- Installing and using Linux on older laptops
- Simple websites, HTML and Markdown
- Back-ups, storage and organising photos and files
- Privacy, security and less stressful digital habits
- Graphics, zines, audio and creative projects
- Reusing and refurbishing computers rather than replacing them
There will be scope for beginners and more confident users, with a mix of demonstrations, shared problem-solving and time to work on your own project.
For more information, or if you would like to help with the club, email todmordenmakery@gmail.com.
